Over the past year, several bloggers and podcasters have sent me some goodies. I’ve accumulated a decent collection of books and other items. I’m going to start giving some of it away via our Giveaways page.
Right now the plan is to have two giveaways per month. One will be an item or book or something that comes from someone in the PF Blogging community.
The second giveaway in the month will be some type of SWAG from my merch store. I think this is a good way to promote the store, and as more people get their hands on our shirts and hoodies, they’ll post pictures on Twitter, FB and Instagram which will draw even more attention.
But the real reason for the giveaways is to build our email list. To enter the giveaway, you need to provide your name and email address. And each entrant agrees to opt into Kindling, our daily email as well.
This is a fairly expensive way to build a list and it will only work long term if two things happen:
- 1. I need to get a decent amount of *new* entrants from each giveaway
- 2. I need these people to say opted in. If they opt out of Kindling at a high rate, then this quickly becomes a losing bet on my end.
The worst case scenario for me is that I get a handful of people to enter, and half of them opt-out of Kindling. At that point I end up paying a few dollars for each new person on my list, and that’s too expensive right now while CFF isn’t making money.
But I’m going to give it a shot for a few months and see how it goes. I’ll report back and let you know the results. If this works for me, then I’ll give you all the dirty details so that you can try the same thing on your blogs.
Starting off with a fail
If I’m honest, things haven’t gotten off to a great start. I kicked this project off by giving away a copy of Work Optional, by Tanja Hester (Our Next Life). That’s a popular book from an even more popular blogger, so I figured it would be a great way to launch this program on Camp FIRE.
And I was right!
I got a good number of entrants in just a few days. I used a plugin to manage these signups and giveaways. One cool feature allows the plugin to auto-select and notify winners.
Awesome time saver, right?!
Well maybe not. The dang plugin selected THREE winners for some reason (I still have no idea why). Luckily I happened to have two copies of the book, but I had to buy the third copy from Amazon and have it shipped to one of the winners.
No biggie. Just a warning to myself and you to test your plugins before you actually use them!! Thankfully it didn’t send winner notification to everyone because I had a decent number of people sign up! 😀
Our current giveaway is a t-shirt from our newly launched Merch store and it ends in about week. So I’ve got just a few days to figure out my plugin settings because I don’t way to giveaway a few dozen shirts just yet 🙂
LMK if you’ve got any questions or tips from giveaways you’ve done. Or if you’ve got any ideas for building an email list, I’d love to hear them!
And before you go … be sure to enter our giveaway for an Index and Chill t-shirt!
