Travel Hacking Our Hawaii Family Vacation

March 6, 2018 by Ty Roberts 6 Comments

Travel hack our Hawaii Family Vacation
Travel hacking our Hawaii family vacation seemed daunting when I first started planning this trip.  But it wasn’t too hard at all and now that I’ve returned I’ve got to be honest, it sucks to be back.

I don’t like the dreary Pacific Northwest this time of year.  Kurt Cobain once sang “in the sun I feel as one.“  He was from an especially dreary little town in the PNW and I’m pretty sure the lack of literal sunshine in his life influenced that line in.  But I digress.

Back to the sun.  I love it!  And do you know what I like even more?  Traveling to a sunny place like Hawaii thanks to the magic of travel hacking.  My wife and I are already scheming on how we can get back for a much longer stay.

Setting Small Goals To Reach Large Goals

February 6, 2018 by Ty Roberts 16 Comments

setting financial goals

One thing I’ve learned the hard way is the importance of setting financial goals. They say ‘the unaimed arrow never misses‘ and I’ve definitely found that to be true.  During the times in my life when I’ve not had a goal, I’ve not made any measurable progress.

I suspect many of you have had similar periods in your life where you fell into a rut and were just going through the motions.

That’s a terribly unfulfilling way to live, so these days I’m constantly striving to reach different goals.  This year is no different.  I’ve set four main financial goals for 2018 they’re going to be tough to achieve, but that’s sort of the point.

Beam – A Follow-Up Review of the High Interest Rate Bank Account App

January 30, 2018 by Ty Roberts 10 Comments

Hey there!  BEAM is now live, and so is my review. Spoiler alert: it’s not good. Check it out right here

BEAM High Interest Bank

Beam High Interest Rate Bank

Several months ago I posted this review of Beam, a Fintech app that’s been getting a lot of buzz for the high interest rates of 2%-4% that they’ll be offering customers.

Most big banks and financial institutions offer interest rates of less than 1%, so the possibility of a 4x return is appealing to say the least!

But is Beam too good to be true? The service was supposed to launch in October 2017; we’re now pushing February 2018 and we still don’t know much about Beam.

So I reached out to the company with several questions that many of you have asked me and I’ve got some answers. What follows is Beam’s word-for word responses to my questions (emphasis added in parts by me).

Boild A Frog

If you’re fixin to boil a frog, one popular technique warns against dropping the critter into a pot of boiling water.  Not surprisingly, a frog will immediately hop out of a pot of boiling water. #shocking

Beam – A Review Of The High Interest Rate Bank Account

  • January 30, 2018 Update: I’ve published an updated review after interviewing Beam again.
  • January 24, 2018 Update:  I’ve finished speaking with Beam and my new uprdate will be published on Tuesday Jan. 30th, 2018
  • January 18, 2018 Update:  I’m talking with Beam right now and hope to have an updated review posted shortly.

This post was updated on 7/23 & 24.  I heard back from Beam and have provided their answers to my questions.

There’s a new FinTec app that’s getting some buzz right now called Beam.  Beam is a high interest rate bank account that’s promising 2 – 4% APY and if that’s true then this will be a very successful product because most of the big banks offer are currently offering less than 1% APY.

I’m calling this post a ‘review’ of the service, but it’s really a sneak peek since the service doesn’t actually launch until later this year.  Before it launches, and before I deposit any of my cash with Beam, I’ve got a few questions.
